This is a report on the translation of Chapters 2-3 of Slavery Was Not the Cause of the War Between the States: The Irrefutable Argument. The translated version, made up of more than 10.000 words, argues the true reason for the American Civil War is the economic conflict between the Union and the Confederate. The translator hopes that the translation can provide a different perspective for Chinese experts and scholars interested in American history and culture. This translation report retrospects the process of translation, the translation difficulties and solutions with many examples. This report consists of four parts: Part One describes the project background, the objective and significance of the translation project. Part Two is an introduction to the source text, including the main content, structure and stylistic features. Part Three is about the functions of source text and target text, translation difficulties and solutions. Part Four focuses on what the translator has learnt from the translation process. As the report reveals, the genre of the source text is academic writing. Therefore, the priority is to present the idea and content of the source text rather than transferring the English expressions. Drawing on the domestication and foreignization translation strategy, the translator adopted some translation methods to achieve the accuracy of information transferring, yet attention was also paid to the naturalness of the Chinese rendering.
