This is a report on analyzing the translation of long sentences in a legal essay, Stability and Transition in the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, written by Rolf Knieper. There are lots of long sentences in that essay so as to make it more difficult to understand, and the features of these long sentences can be summarized as follows:(1) sentences are long but simple;(2) the word order of English sentences are different from the Chinese translation; and(3) the long sentences are complex in structure and words. Thus, based on the theory of functional equivalence, and several typical long sentences of the original essay, this report firstly analyzes the sentence features, then adopts chooses sequence method, reverse method, recombination method, partial method, and synthetic method respectively. By addressing the translation strategies and translation methods, this report is intended to makes the original text easier to understand, meanwhile to share the translation methods of long sentences in legal text.
