The interpretive theory is the first systematic theory in the field of interpretation which has made special contributions to the interpreter training and the guidance to practical interpretation activity. On the basis of the theoretical framework of the interpretive theory, this thesis mainly conducted a study on how the interpreter deals with the Chinese idioms that have been commonly used at the press conferences by the speakers. To put it another way, this thesis aims to explore what strategies the competent interpreters tend to transfer the idiomatic expressions to the target language in a more acceptable and natural fashion.Specifically, this thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter tackles the brief introduction of the research background, the objective and significance of the study, and the research methodology. In the second chapter, the overview of conference interpretation is presented, including its development and characteristics(especially at the linguistic level). The third chapter involves the basic theoretical framework of the interpretive theory, including its historical development and related concepts. Chapter four synthesizes, by combining the interpretive theory, the strategies adopted by the interpreters in the process of interpreting the Chinese idioms which appear in the selected materials. The last part of the thesis is a closing chapter, pointing out the implications and limitations of the current study as well as the directions for future studies in this domain.
