A Report On The Translation Of The House Of The Dead Hand,a Horror Story

The House of the Dead Hand is a short horror story written by famous American female writer Edith Wharton and published in 1898. Instead of writing horror stories to entertain readers, Edith Wharton wrote them to reveal social reality and express her own feelings of the upper class. As this is a story that belongs to expressive texts, the translation was accomplished under the guidance of text typology theory and much attention was paid to those parts that represent the author’s writing purpose and express her feelings. So in this translation report, several typical examples were selected from the aspects of settings and characters, and the connotations and the translation skills applied were specifically analyzed.This report consists of four chapters. Chapter One introduces the study of horror story translation, Edith Wharton and the source text, as well as the background for writing this report. Chapter Two describes the whole translation process as well as the translating process and quality inspection. Chapter Three focuses on case studies, analyzing the translation skills applied to some typical sentences and paragraphs of settings and characters description. Chapter Four summarizes this translation practice and the personal understanding about translation of horror stories.
