After entering the 21 st Century, as China progresses along the path of globalisation, its integration into the world will inevitably be faster and deeper. As one of the most fundamental tools in China’s international cultural communication, Chinese has gradually become one of the most popular languages in the world.Vietnam has always been a traditional next-door partner of China. With its current economic situation, Vietnam needs a workforce that is proficient in Chinese language. This has made Chinese one of the most important foreign languages in Vietnam’s education system. Consequently, it has also brought unprecedented oppotunities for the teaching and learning of Chinese language in the universities and colleges of Vietnam.Hanoi has one of the largest numbers of Chinese learners in Vietnam. When naming Vietnam’s most prestigious institutions for the teaching and learning of Chinese, one cannot go without mentioning Hanoi University. Hanoi University is one of key universities directly under the influenced of Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training. It is one of Vietnam’s public universities with the longest history and also provides education with the widest range of foreign languages. An investigation into the current status regarding teaching methodology is an important field in relation to educational research. The author investigates a wide range of subjects by means of: Questionaires, face to face interview, telephone interviews, email ect. Thereby, providing objective analysis and assessment for the teaching and learning at Hanoi University. By means of assessment and evaluation, the author offers a few recommendations consistent with the economic and social conditions of Vietnam today, providing reliable references to stipulate policies for the improvement of teaching quality. This survey shows that the main form of Chinese teaching in Hanoi University is in training students who specialise in Chinese language(Mandarin as their first foreign language). The teaching and learning scale has been extended, but mainly due to the large increase in number of students, there have been a shortage of teachers. Currently, the teacher-student ratio of Hanoi University is much lower than prescribed by the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam. In addition, the Chinese language curriculum at Hanoi University still faces many problems such as: not conforming to the characteristics and learning needs of students in Vietnam; having a lack of consideration for distrbution rationally; and providing inadequate teaching facilities. To solve these problems, the author offers innovative ideas such as: strengthening and standardizing teacher’s Chinese proficiency; adjusting the number of students in each class; improving the system complied in the Chinese language course to suit the social situation and characteristics of students in Vietnam; improving infrastructure and teaching equipment; and promoting international exchange and cooperation in the field of Chinese language education.
