| This is a project report on the translation of The Confident Creative/Drawing to Free the Hand and Mind written by American artist Cat Bennett. The first 10 chapters from introduction to chapter 9 together with the acknowledgment of the book are chosen to be analyzed in this report. The source text concludes an introduction to drawing skills and techniques and some of the author’s philosophical thoughts on drawing. The purpose of translating the book into Chinese is to introduce the thinking and drawing styles of foreign artists to Chinese readers, help them to get back their confidence and broaden their horizon on drawing. "Accurately and fully reveal the intention of the book to the greatest extent, translate with fluent expression, and conforms to the reading habit of translation readers" are the goals of this translation project. Skopostheory is chosen as the guidance theory after fully understanding the book and the translation requirements. Thus, with the guidance of the "three rules" and Nord’s "Function plus Loyalty Rule" of Skopostheory, translation skills such as literal translation, free translation, ellipsis and combination are adopted during the translation in order to achieve the goals mentioned above.The report consists of four chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to the translation project, including background information, project significance and structure of the report. Chapter two can be divided into three parts, which are the background of the author, main contents of the original book and features of the source text. Chapter three is about quality control, including the difficulties appeared during the translation and how to solve those problems by means of certain translation techniques under the guidance of Skopostheory. Chapter four is the conclusion part. The author concludes the whole thesis and put forward the implications of the project as well as some problems still yet to be solved in the project. |
