| In the period of Republic of China, international and domestic scholars made a series of investigations in Qiang Area of Sichuan and achieved groundbreaking research results, which recorded the society, politics, economy, culture and other aspects of Qiang Area in modern times. They clarified some basic problems in the history of the Qiang, and put forward some questions, which worth further discussing in the Qiang’ history. It laid the foundation for the recognition and research on the Qiang after 1949.This thesis focuses on combing the series of academic investigations. The first chapter is an introduction, which defined the study object in spatial range through interpreting the concepts of Qiang and Qiang ethnic in the title. On the basis of reviewing and summarizing senior scholars’ results, this thesis came up with research questions and introduce the research ideas and material resources. The second chapter analyzed the background of international and domestic scholars’ investigation on Qiang Area of Sichuan, mainly analyzed the introduction of western ethnology,the rise of Chinese ethnology research and the formation of the upsurge of the southwest frontier research. The third chapter mainly discussed the foreign scholars’ academic investigation and pioneering research on Qiang Area, such as the research of Thomas Torrance, David Crockett Graham and Sidney David Gamble. The forth chapter introduced the domestic scholars and organizations’ investigations of Qiang Area, such as Xie Peiyun, Li Guangming, Zhuang Xueben, Hu Jianmin, Feng Hanji, Wen You and the Border Service Department of Church of Christ in China. The fifth chapter analyzed how their investigation activities influenced on the social life of Qiang Area, National Government attached great importance of these investigation activities and how the investigation results influenced on the academic researching of Qiang ethnic after 1949. |
