With the rapid growth of world oil economy, each country’s demand for petroleum exploration and resource consumption is growing, and its status as the country’s economic energy strategy has become increasingly prominent. At the same time, the utilization rate associated with oil drilling and exploring products and equipment has also been significantly improved. Meanwhile, Technical exchanges and field service flows between China and Western countries are increasingly more frequent. Petroleum machinery equipment for different categories is produced in order to meet the different needs and types of products of export demands. The English products and equipment translation becomes a great necessity for companies to foster a healthy and bight image for international market promotion. Along with the considerable growth in imports and exports volume associated with petroleum products, translation of the petroleum equipment manual plays a very important role in international communication of the oil industry. Therefore, its translation accuracy and rational grasp are particularly important.At present, Petroleum Machinery Products Instruction (PMPI) belongs to "English for Science and Technology"(EST), and we know that it has the clear following features which include:easy words or phrases, sentences with strict grammar structure, even objective, logical explanation, not over-self-embellishment and so on. These are the general lexical, syntactic with the basic discourse characteristic features of "EST". For PMPI, it can be characterized by its frequent uses of nouns noun phrases, technical terms, short written and limited structures at the lexical level and at the related comparing level. Then, it can be described by their own imperative and pure words and sentences; except that, at the basic discourse level, it can be characterized by especially design patterns which can ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the interpretation. Therefore, the translation of PMPI with Nida’s functional equivalence theory on the surface level, deep level and rhetoric level of language is analyzed in detail. In the analysis, the linguistic foreign language characteristics of PMPI, mainly including its lexical, grammatical syntactic and discourse features in different levels are focused on.In this paper, the aims of the author are as the following:(1) to find out the unique linguistic characteristics of Petroleum Machinery Product Instructions (PMPI); (2) to analyze the translation of PMPI from the perspective of Nida’s functional equivalence theory. In the paper, the translation of PMPI is analyzed using functional equivalence theory by some specific examples.The thesis firstly introduces the background, significance and the layout of the thesis. Then it is the literature review describing Nida’s functional equivalence theory and some previous studies on it, and it also discusses the related research method, specially the analytical model used in the thesis. The main parts of the thesis illustrate the linguistic characteristics of PMPI at levels of lexicon, syntax and discourse, and its translation on the perspective of Nida’s functional translation theory at the surface level, rhetoric level and deep level of language based on stereoscopic linguistics. The last part is the conclusion of this thesis and summarizes what has been discussed, presenting the major findings and pointing out limitations of present research as well as suggestions for future studies.This study will not only help improve the translation of PMPI, but promote the study of translation on pragmatic discourse. It will be greatly conducive to PMPI translator and enterprise as well.
