The Miao embroidery art of Southeast Guizhou is an important part of the Chinese art, whose colorful butterfly-pattern adornment design and rich and unique cultural connotation have made it a flower in the art world. As there is no written language in the Miao ethnic, Miao embroidery patterns therefore become the important symbol to record their history and culture, which can be considered as the Miao ethnic epic in colored threads. As the main pattern of Miao embroidery, the decorative design of butterfly-pattern can reflect Miao’s psychological consciousness, thinking mode, aesthetic consciousness and cultural art. Meanwhile, being the increasingly rarely-seen intangible cultural heritage, it is also the image of the Miao culture and the life atmosphere.First of all, through reviewing the soil for the growth of butterfly-pattern in Miao embroidery, historical origin and development, the article analyses symbol, pattern modelling, color and composition on the decorative design in a systematic and in-depth way, thus summarizing its decorative design rule for art creation. Secondly, combined with the characteristics of the butterfly patterns adornment design, the article illustrates its profound cultural connotation and unique aesthetic features. In addition, this paper discusses the butterfly patterns application in modern design with practical examples. Finally, the article tries to apply Miao embroidery butterfly pattern to modern design practice, and sums up certain application rules, therefore integrating traditional culture and modern design practice, to provide innovative perspectives for modern design.The diversity of the butterfly-pattern adornment design of Miao embroidery in Southeast Guizhou not only embodies the concept of Miao ethnic that there are sipirts in all things from ancestor worship, expressing their yearn for ancestors, but also represents their enthusiastic yet simple, plain and lovely romantic feelings. Moreover, the butterfly-pattern shows their pursuit for a better life, exhibits their wish for thriving, and also conveys the harmonious beauty of unity of nature and life and representative beauty of unity of form and spirit. The aesthetic feeling of form and cultural implication wthin the butterfly-pattern of Miao embroidery is worthy of deeper exploration form the angle of design and our protection and inheritance.
