Pontianak is the city with the largest Chinese population in Indonesia, hence researching the curriculum and teaching of Chinese language in the city’s senior high schools really has practical significance. This thesis uses literature, investigation, observation, statistics and comprehensive analysis methods to initially study and analyze the general situation of Pontianak. Then, a more thorough analysis is made using the Chinese language teaching in six representative senior high schools as object of investigation and starting with the attitude of the local government and people towards Chinese language education. The analysis has put forward the problems in such aspects as irrational design of Chinese language curriculum and teaching method, unequal quality of Chinese language teachers, and widespread fear of difficulty among students. Finally, three countermeasures are put forward on the basis of the problems. The first is to revise the course plan, choose and compile practical teaching materials according to actual circumstances; the second is to increase the quality of teachers by extending the scholarship quota, increasing the frequency of teaching training courses, and raising teachers’ remuneration; the third is to arouse students’ interest and increase teaching efficiency by using interesting methods, introducing China in general and disseminating Chinese culture.
