West Kalimantan is the Indonesian Province with the earliest Chinese settlement, as well as the highest population of Chinese ethnics, Pontianak is the capital of West Kalimantan province, it is a very important city in Indonesia. Chinese Teaching in Pontianak started early, but due to historical reasons was interrupted for more than thirty years. The Chinese ethnics of Pontianak city through their ancestral culture and clan associations, inherited and continued to save the Chinese dialect and culture. After the Indonesian government permitted the restoration of Chinese education, Chinese language in Pontianak gradually spread and drew more attention. Pontianak has a good foundation of Chinese culture, its Chinese ethnics often use Teochew and Hakka as means of communication. Because of such background, Chinese teaching in Pontianak is unique and superior, and as well characterized with a lot of problems. In order to understand the specific circumstances associated with Chinese teaching in Pontianak’s secondary schools, I surveyed and researched on the establishment of secondary schools in Pontianak, among which I sent questionnaires to, and visited relevant administrators, teachers and students of four regular secondary schools: the Mandiri School, Santo Fransiskus Asisi School, LKIA School and Abdi Agape School. We surveyed the establishment and managerial conditions, the basic conditions of Chinese language teachers, the teaching of the Chinese language, the Chinese language students, as well as the choice and effectiveness of Chinese language textbooks in these schools. Through surveys and interviews, we came to understand the basic state of Chinese language teaching in Pontianak, analyzed the superiority it possesses, discovered its existing problems, and then put forward corresponding measures and suggestions with respect to the problems and positive aspects, so as to contribute to the Chinese language teaching cause in Pontianak and even Indonesia as a whole.
