This thesis addresses the study of the effective English teaching and English teachers' dispositions. Recently, it is accepted that effective teachings consist of professional knowledge, pedagogical skills and disposition. The foundamental role of professional knowledge in the effective teaching is undoubted. The thesis tries to verify the effect English teacher dispositions and their choices of English teaching methods (which is one of the pedagogical skills, the thesis uses it as a representative) having on the effective teachings by investigating the correlation between college English teachers' dispositions and the effective teaching and the correlation of teachers'choices of English teaching methods with the effective teaching. Furthermore the thesis studies the role of dispositions in real teachings, exactly how dispositions work in the effective English teaching. Through studying the correlation of dispositions with the teachers' choices of English teaching methods, the thesis aims to find out the way in which the dispositions work in the effective English teaching. Are the good dispositions modifiers of the employment of English teaching methods to realize the effective teaching, or do the good dispositions work through other aspects in the teaching process?In the field of the effective teaching, "disposition" is seen as a teaching skill or a style of teaching behaviors. The thesis advocates that English teachers are hoped to be of good dispositions, because they are expected to exhibit a certain manner or style of teaching good for the effective teaching, not because they are expected to exhibit a certain traits or characters to be picked up by students. Teachers'disposition being an important aspect should be given enough attention by teacher educators and teachers themselves. Certain good dispositions (confidence, passion, fairness, respect, etc.) should be considered as a special teaching skill or teaching manner, which are formed gradually in the practice teachings to realize the English teachers'value and the students'improvement. It is worth mentioning that the so called "good disposition" helpful for the effective English teaching has no fixed forms. So long as the disposition is fit for the development of students, it is named "good disposition".
