With the rapid development of overseas Chinese teaching, Confucius Institutes around the world urgently needs a large number of Chinese teachers to meet the growing demand of Chinese teaching. However, at this stage, the number of proficient Chinese teacher is inadequate. In most non-English speaking countries, most of the Chinese teachers have a good level of English, but only are preliminary masters of the language of their host countries. Although generally believe in second language teaching, the best way is using target language to teach target language. But in the actual language teaching, especially in the initial stage, due to the different levels of students and teachers, they will encounter the case to use English or mother language as the media language. Therefore, this study is mainly research on the use of media language in non-English speaking country. This paper is divided into five parts. The first chapter is the introduction, mainly on the significance of the article, the definition of media language, the research of domestic and foreign scholars, the theoretical basis of the thesis, and the researching methods. The second chapter is the analysis part of the questionnaire, the main object of this study is Chinese teachers and volunteers of Confucius Institute in Barcelona, so we do the survey and data analysis on them. We did the survey on their students, to survey the proportion of media language and the using situations in all aspects of the class. It was found that most of the teachers in the classroom using media language as a very important part, and the lower level of the students, the greater proportion of using media language. The third chapter is the analysis of teaching cases. We videoed the real teaching situations, and described in four parts of lessons, the introduction, the teaching, the practice, and the ending of the class. Through analysis, we found that in the process of teaching, teachers often use the media language unconsciously. It’s difficult to use the target language consistently. In the process of teaching, translation is the most commonly used method. In addition, teacher will repeat or use simpler language to express the purpose, with the other movements and gestures. The fourth chapter is the analysis of the feedback. We survey the satisfaction of the students of the using of media language in their class, and their expectations and suggestions to the teachers. The survey found that most students are satisfied about the use of media language. Most students in the primary stage want their teacher to be proficient in their mother tongue, and have a reach teaching experience in Chinese. To the senior stage, most of the students said that it is not important about the teachers cannot speak native language, as long as they can teach well in Chinese. The fifth chapter is the conclusion, discusses the recommendations for the use of media language overseas, as well as at the defects and shortcomings of this article. This article’s sample only comes from Confucius Institute in Barcelona, so there is a shortage in the quantity of samples. And the objects of this study are the teachers and students of Confucius Institute in Barcelona, the media language in other countries need other researches.
