Pauses are very common phenomena in the process of interpretation. Improper pauses include silent pauses and filled pauses. All kinds of improper pauses in interpretation not only influence or restrict the quality of interpretation, but also cause the difficulty for audience to understand the original text, and they may have doubts about the speaker’s intentions, even worse, they may consider the interpreter not qualified for the work. If there are too many improper pauses in interpreting, they may bring the interpreter huge psychological pressure.Improper pauses in consecutive interpretation can be related to the the process of speech production. This paper uses the speech outward manifestation of the internal control mechanisms, along with the domestic and international study of pauses in spoken foreign languages as theoretical basis, using "Blair Re-election Speech " as the study material, and trying to analyze the author’s English-Chinese consecutive interpreting record. The purpose of the study is to summarize the causes of improper pauses. The author classified the causes into internal factors and external factors. Internal factors are mainly caused by the interpreter, which can be divided into several different segment, from source language listening segment to note-taking segment, and finally is the interpretation segment. The author will analyze the causes of improper pauses during the interpretation according to the classification. External factors can be divided into the influence of the on-set environment, the rate of speech, accent of speaker and the impact of on-site equipment such as sound volume. External factors are not as important as the internal factors, however, they still can be a part of the factors restricting the quality of interpretation. The author will combine her own experience in the process of interpretation, making classification of all the causes, and analyzing the strategies to cope with them one by one, so that the author can draw on some useful experience in order to make preparation for future interpretation.
