This paper is a translation report, and the source text is Chapter5Patents andTrade Secrets of the book, Global Intellectual Property Law, written by GrahamDutfield and Uma Suthersanen and published in2008. Beginning with theinternationalization of intellectual property, this book introduces the emergence andthe development of the global intellectual property (copyright, patents, trademarks, designs and new plant varieties, etc.), and then, discusses about it together with theglobal hot topics like international human rights, information technologies, education, culture, biology, life and health. In Chapter5, the two authors give a systematicalintroduction to the origins and development of the patent laws in Europe and theUnited States from international and comparative perspectives instead of a limitedstudy on territorial cases or statutes, which offers the readers a much morecomprehensive understanding of the patents laws in the aforementioned jurisdictions. Therefore, the source text is of high values to be translated and referred to.In this report, a main discussion on the theories and principles applied in thetranslation process is presented, followed by a further probe into the difficulties, basically on words and long sentences translation. Then, several methods andstrategies to such difficulties are proposed. Finally, a brief conclusion of thistranslation report is given with the view to provide the help for the further translationpractice.
