Cohesion In The Subtitle Of House Of Cards And Their Chinese Translation

With the development of global economy, the frequent communication betweencountries has increased. It becomes important to learn about other counties’ politics,economy, society and culture. Watching TV series becomes a popular method forpeople to learn the custom and culture of foreign countries. The quality of subtitletranslation is an important factor to influence people in learning English. This thesistakes Halliday and Hasan’s Cohesion Theory as theoretical framework, aiming tofind the similarities and differences between English and Chinese through analyzingthe grammatical and lexical cohesive devices.This thesis draws the limitations from the previous study and provides somenew methods and viewpoints. This thesis makes a study of cohesive devicesmanifested in the series in terms of grammatical cohesive devices and lexicalcohesive devices. The research methods in this study are both quantitative andqualitative. First is to collect all the cohesive devices in House of Cards and itsChinese version and counting the quantity of cohesive devices. Have a contrastivestudy about the number of cohesive devices and point out its distribution frequency.Then have a qualitative study with example illustrations, analyzing the differencesbetween English and Chinese cohesive devices. Due to the differences between twolanguages, it is necessary to summarize the translation problems in House of Cardsand propose proper translation methods in order to have a better translation worksthat conform to the target language.
