The Study On Fang Xiaobiao’s Dunzhai Anthology

Fang Xiaobiao, born in a prominent literary family of Fang in Tongcheng, was afamous scholar and good at writing and versification. He experienced ups and downs allhis life and suffered two major literary inquisitions before and after his death. His socialidentity changed dramatically from a word minister in the museums and pavilions to anexiled person, and then an average poet. Fang’s poems were collected in the book called“Dunzhai Anthology”. Seldom have his poems been paid close attention to by scholars dueto most of his work’s being destroyed. My article will take Dunzhai Anthology as the mainobject to make objective research with emphasis on Fang Xiaobiao’s versification invarious themes. Another thing I will do is to analyze the contents, styles and artisticcharacteristics of his poems.This paper consists of four parts. The introduction part introduces the basis of thetopic selection as well as the research value and also summarizes the current academicresearch status of Fang Xiaobiao and his poetry. The first chapter gives a brief overview ofthe Fang family of Guilin, Tongcheng, tells Fang Xiaobiao’s life story on the basis ofhistorical materials and chooses some of his friends to introduce. Discussion of the originof his creation and poetic thought is also included in this part. The second chapter tries tointerpret the origin of the anthology’s name. Following that is the introduction of printingand publishing of the book. Then the contents of the selected poems are classified andstudied according to different themes and categories. Last but not least, I’ll make specialand detailed analysis for such topics as “Chant of History, Lament for the People’sLivelihood, Travel Record in the Mountains, Nostalgia on the Journey, Cherishing FamilyAffection, etc.” In the third Chapter, I’ll sum up the tender and slivery poetry style afterdetailed study of the contents of Dunzhai Anthology. At the same time, analyses of thecharacteristics of the poems in terms of their history value and composition structure alsocan be found in this part.
