With the deepening of international globalization, China plays an increasingly vital rolein the whole world, and it also has great impact on international affairs. However, beingcautious is also inevitable when China enjoys this high status. Especially those diplomaticspeeches which can directly influence international relationship have always been the hottopic to personage of all circles. Therefore, doing a research into diplomatic interpretation ona case study of press conference of Yang Jiechi from the angle of functional linguistics isrepresentative.This essay consists of four parts: Part One gives a brief introduction of the backgroundand the meaning of the selected topic; Part Two mainly reveals the characters of diplomaticinterpretation itself as well as theories in functional linguistics; Part Three is a specificanalysis of the speech of Yang Jiechi with analyzing dealing principles from threeperspectives and Final Part concludes the entire essay. The aim of the essay is to illustratesome principles of diplomatic interpretation from functional linguistics with an analysis intothe speech of Yang and to help interpreters to perfectly complish their tasks in the future witha good understanding of themselves or the occasion, and with flexible use of strategies.
