This essay focuses on the font design of movie posters. Take the posters of a century from1905to2005as a case study, the article aims to look into the transformation and conversion ofaesthetic concepts and visual manifestations resulted from political, economic, cultural andlifestyle changes.The evolution of font design in movie poster’s development can mainly bedivided into three types: printing font, aesthetic font and calligraphy font.Movie poster is atypical poster form in the history of Chinese poster art in the20th century.It is accompanied bythe development of the film, meanwhile it reflects the relationship between tradition and modernpainting and design, as well as politics, social structure and business economy of the history.The essay adopts the approaches of longitudinal and lateral comparative analysis. Thelongitudinal comparative analysis is based on history, which tries to:1)describe the theme,artistic expression, content, form of movie posters at different stages;2)analyze the symbolicmeaning and reason for the character, facial expression, clothing, attitude, posture and scenedesign;3)look into the potential links between movie and movie poster (different topics at thesame period and same topics at different periods) through font, style, size, location and theoverall relationships of the posters.According to the lateral comparative analysis, font designscan be separated to three parts: printing font design, creative and graphic font design andcalligraphy font design, and it tries to explore:1) how font types are employed in different kindsof different movies;2) what factors will make an influence as to bring about the changes of font,font style and layout.
