The modern Shanghai is the first place in China for western economic and culturalimplantation and also the center of China movie’s start and development in the firsthalf of the20th century. The introduction of Western poster advertising and printingskills promoted the birth and development of Shanghai movie poster. In this paper, Itake the Shanghai movie poster in the period of the Republic of China as researchobject. On the basis of film industry development and every poster’s characteristics,Iexplore the history of Shanghai movie poster and its dual nature of advertising and artdesign.The paper consists of three parts: the first part is focusing on the summary of movieposters, mainly from the origin, nature and function, size, type and creative group andthe comparison with several other film advertisements. The second part is describingthe development of movie posters. According to the characteristics of the Shanghaifilm industry development and posters,the history of Shanghai movie poster is dividedinto five stages: initial period, rapid development period, further development period,slow development period and shaping period. On the background of the film industryand analysis of some classic movie posters,I summarize the characteristics of movieposter in every stage. The third part is the analysis of the movie poster design andadvertising attributes. The discussion of art design is just from the three visualelements of design which are text, graphics and color.Advertising attribute discussedthe poster distribution range, Advertising appeal points and the relationship betweenthe quality of posters and the movie box office earnings.Finally, I made acomprehensive evaluation in the terms of movie history, advertisement history and ofart design history.In the paper, the widest possible collection of relevant text and image materials,analysis and interpretation of the pictures is just in order to make up the blank in theresearch of movie posters of the Republic of China in Shanghai. |
