China is one of the countries suffering from water scarcity, while threats to water reserve such as pollution have only made it worse. The report is based on the interpretation of a lecture called A Chemist's View of Drinking Water by Dr.David Sedlak from ACS(America Chemistry Society),which covers several aspects of water desalination including reverse osmosis membrane, solutions to lead poisoning, water disinfection, and potable water reuse. The report is guided by the Interpretive Theory, which is established in the 1970s by Danica Seleskovitch, former Head of the Paris School of Interpreters and Translators. The Interpretive Theory is known for its emphasis on sense delivery and the Triangular Model, namely "Comprehension-Deverbalization-Reformulation",which illustrates the mental process of the interpreter during interpreting.Chemical terminologies and thematic knowledge involved within the lecture is one major challenge for the interpreter while the fast delivery of the speaker poses another challenge.Several coping tactics are put forward to address the challenges including preparation, anticipation, simplification, and syntactic linearity.Detailed analyses are given to demonstrate the significance of these coping tactics in simultaneous interpretation from the perspective of the Interpretive Theory.
