With the ceaseless development of globalization and the continuous rising of China’seconomic status in the world, China shares remarkable prosperousness and diversification ofboth commercial and cultural activities with other countries and regions. Interpreting plays anindispensable role in all kinds of international communications. And it directly affects theeffect and accessibility of cross-culture communication. Therefore, it can not only revealtranslation’s nature, but also direct interpreting action to comprehend interpreting’s operationprocess and innate character. In recent years, researches on interpreting presentsinter-discipline character, moreover, psychology, cognitive science and traditional interpretingtheories tend to the new direction of inter-infiltration and anastomosing. As western classicaltheory, the Interpretive Theory is a theoretical system proposed by French interpretive schoolwhich takes Danica Seleskovitch as a representative. Interpretation is considered as acommunicative activity, and its subject is speaker’s connotative meaning rather than languageitself. In order to delivery sense perfectly, speaker’s meaning should be combined withinterpreter’s non-lingual knowledge. The process is sense transformation instead of codeexchanging automatically. Due to this issue, sense delivery takes the place of language as thesubject of interpreting research. Danica Seleskovitch and Daniel Gile divided interpretationinto comprehension, deverbalization and expression. Deverbalization is recognized as middlesegment which produces sense between comprehension and expression; furthermore, it is alsoregarded as the core part of sense delivery. Cognitive psychology views information processas kernel and holds the opinion that interpreting refers to a kind of cognitive action, whileinterpreting process represents cognitive process. Lingual signs offer many hypotheticalmeanings, and it becomes possible for the process of disentangling truth from falsehood because of cognition’s participation. This is also one of the foundations of the analysis on theInterpretive Theory from cognitive perspective. There are many domestic and overseas researches about the Interpretive Theory andcognitive processing respectively. However, this thesis aims to discuss the following issues.1. How to analyze the Interpretive Theory from cognitive perspective?2. The Interpretive Theory and cognitive processing mechanism have differentemphases. What kind of multiple-perspective explanation do cognitive processing mechanismand the Interpretive Theory form to explicate interpreting behavior? Some interpreting segments are selected from Premier Li Keqiang of the State Councilmet with Chinese and foreign press from2013to2015as analysis object. Combined withcognitive processing mechanism, analyze the Interpretive Theory from cognitive perspective.Cognitive basis, cognitive operation and cognitive regulating are three main statements ofcognitive processing mechanism, which is used to analyze the three stages “comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression” of the Interpretive Theory correspondingly. Furthermore, the Interpretive Theory’s transcoding and deverbalization phrases are explicated from viewsof top-down process mode and down-top process mode of cognition.Firstly, this thesis introduces the content and development of the Interpretive Theory andcognitive process mechanism with literature review followed closely. Chapter3presents theanalysis on comprehension, deverbalization and re-expression from the views of cognitivebasis, cognitive operation and cognitive regulating correspondingly. Chapter4puts top-downprocess mode and transcoding, down-top process mode and deverbalization into explanation. At last, this thesis draws a conclusion and proposes the limitation and further suggestion ofthe research.
