The Interpretive Theory is the first systematic interpreting theory.Originated f'rom abundant interpreting practices, the Interpretive Theory is an exemplary combination of theory with practice. The theory is particularly relevant to interpreters, and interpreter trainees and trainers alike. It is underlined in this theory that the object of interpretation is "sense".During the process of interpretation, interpreters should deverbalize.Interpretation follows a triangular process:comprehension,de-verbalization and reformulation.Seleskovitch puts forward the concept that cognitive knowledge participates in interpretation activity. When interpreting, interpreters have to constantly draw on their cognitive knowledge to facilitate the understanding of speakers'intention. The interpreting practice is analyzed within the theoretical framework outlined above. The analysis of the interpreting practice is divided into three parts:listening, reproduction and cognitive knowledge.By combining the Interpretive Theory with the interpreting practice,it is concluded that interpreters should improve language competency, expand cognitive knowledge and raise the awareness of interpreting as an interpretative process. The analysis indicates that the Interpretive Theory is of profound importance for interpreting practice. The author hopes that this report can be conducive to interpreters, arouse their awareness of-the relevance of the Interpretive Theory, and encourage interpreters to apply this theory to the learning and practice of interpreting. Also, the author hopes that this report can provide some substance to the study and application of the Interpretive Theory.
