A Report On Interpreting For Shandong Red Cross Eye Hospital And ORBIS Flying Hospital International Program

With deepening of reforming and opening up and the growth of globalization andregional integration, China has more frequent exchanges with the world in such areasas economics, politics, culture, sports and commerce. Language is the bridge ofcommunication. With the growing of official and unofficial communications,interpreting plays an more important role and it is paid great attention by the society.As the most widely spoken language in the world, English is used in most of theinternational communications. This fuels the increasing demand for competentEnglish interpreters in China. Interpreting is a challenging profession and to be asuccessful interpreter needs not only systematic learning of interpreting theories butalso continuous practice. For student interpreters, they should take more interpretingpractice in the spare time and summarize the interpreting experience to find theirweakness and master the interpreting ability and skills.This report is based on the author’s interpreting experience in ORBIS Flying EyeHospital and Shandong Red Cross Eye Hospital from April14th to April29th,2014.In this report, the author firstly gives a brief introduction of the interpreting programincluding the background information of China’s eye health condition, theintroduction of ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital which contains its history, its workingfocus, and the work they had done for the world health care, and the corporationbetween the ORBIS and Shandong Red Cross Eye Hospital. Then the author gives adetailed description of the interpreting process including the preparation and thedifficulties encountered in the interpreting process and the corresponding copingmethods. Later, the author introduces Gile’s effort’s model and the note-taking ininterpreting. Finally the author reports the feedback of the interpreting program andpoints out the weakness and the ways for improvement and thus helps interpretersbetter grasp the interpreting skills and guides the future interpreting practice.
