A Report On The Translation Of Parallel Structure In Engineering English

With the deepening of China’s reform and open policy and fast improvement of economy,we have developed fast on the aspect of civil engineering and provided more assistance toundeveloped countries. As a result, the translation of engineering English becomes more andmore important. This report is based on the The Safety Project Design Plan of Sanaa YemenCity which the author translated while being a part-time translator.Engineering English is a kind of highly professional language which is not affected bysubjective factors like culture. Engineering English contains a lot of terminologies. On theaspect of sentence, in order to highlight objectivity, nominal phrases and passive voice arecommonly used. The source text mainly introduces various systems commonly involved inengineering text, including Central Control System, Generic Cabling System, detailedconstruction plan and so on. The parallel structures include the translation of nominalstructures, imperative structures and structures with subjects. The nominal structures are in theform of nouns. The imperative structures contain many imperative sentences. Each of themillustrates a kind of system. Structures with subjects are used to illustrate the function ofsystem. The source text mainly discusses and analyzes the translation of parallel structure. Thereport includes the description of translation tasks, processes, case analysis and practicalconclusions.The description of translation task makes a comprehensive introduction about thepractice, including background information, the requirements of clients and the introduction about the text. The process mainly describes the preparation the author has made, theproblems the author met during translation, the solutions and matters needing attention. Caseanalysis is the core part of this report. This report mainly discusses the translation of parallelstructure, especially nominal structures, imperative structures and structures with their ownsubjects. Besides, relative solutions are also provided so that the author can better translatethis kind of text. Commonly used translation methods include: division, amplification,conversion of parts of speech, as well as conversion of active voice and passive voice. Thefinal part is a conclusion the author made, which recorded the problems the author has met,such as how to analyze its type and how to find out proper translation methods. During thetranslation process, one of the most difficult things is how to classify these structures. At first,the author translates these items in sequence. After finishing half of them, the author findstheir features and makes a classification, according to which, the author translates them again.Besides, the author also summarizes the experience the author has got and someinspiration for the author’s future career, which can lead the author to be a qualified andcompetent translator. After all these, the author better knows how hard it is to be a translator.
