| Guangdong Hengda Women’s Volleyball Team has gained one first prize and two second prizes with the help of the head coach Lang Ping, and strong foreign players. Spurred on by the success of Hengda Women’s Volleyball Club, more and more volleyball clubs are now seeking outside assistance. The number of foreign players in the China Volleyball League reached a peak in the 2014-2015 season. As clubs have spent heavily on hiring foreign players, the team interpreter, as a new club member, has become increasingly significant. The interpreter’s job can, for the most part, be classified as escort interpreting.Unlike conference interpreting which is generally formal, featuring long sentence groups, escort interpreting is more characterized by broad topics and high unpredictability. The requirement for specialist knowledge and the limitations on available time are difficulties peculiar to escort interpreting.This paper is a practice report on the author’s work experience from October 20th, 2014 to January 9th,2015 as a team interpreter in Fujian YanGo Women’s Volleyball Club. Based on examples from the author’s experience, the paper aims to summarize the main problems during interpreting and to further analyze the main reasons of these problems using Gile’s Comprehension Equation as its theoretical basis. On that foundation and with the aim of providing both a frame of reference and some inspiration for other practicing interpreters in order to help them successfully deal with the challenges in their own endeavors, the paper concludes by suggesting possible coping strategies. |
