In modern lexicography, the users’ needs become increasingly important in dictionary design and compilation and the compilers are paying more and more attention to the user-friendliness principle. Each dictionary has its specific user groups. Only in consistent with their demands can the dictionary realize its value. However, the majority of dictionaries on Chinese market are the introduced versions from abroad, which are more suitable for western English learners. While the specialty of Chinese EFL learners are not taken into consideration in the compilation of these dictionaries, the efficiency of dictionary use is relatively low. Then, what are the specific characteristics of Chinese EFL learners? What are their preferences and habits and what are the problems in their using dictionaries? That is, what are their specific needs on learners’ dictionaries? What role do learners’ dictionaries play in their language learning activities? In view of their needs, how to make the microstructure of the dictionaries more scientific and reasonable? In combination with the characteristics of Chinese EFL learners and their problems in using E-C learners’ dictionaries, the author tries to take NECD4 as an example, and gives some suggestions on the compilation and design of the microstructure on the basis of taking advantage of preponderances of other excellent English dictionaries.
