A Study On E-C Translation Of Political News In Light Of Skopos Theory

Political news and the related content have always been a great part of news since news was created. The intercultural communication of political news cannot succeed without translators work. As a widely spoken language, English language bears most information. Therefore the E-C translation of English political news plays a more and more important in international political communication.Skopos theory is adopted as a guide theory in this thesis and the research material comes from a series of news reports about Russia’s takeover Crimea which was controlled by Ukraine. As a breakthrough with the traditional equivalence-oriented approaches, skopos theory has offered a brand new perspective to translation study. Based on skopos theory, translation is an intercultural action with distinct purpose and the purpose decides translation strategies. Translation action is constrained by various factors. In political news E-C translation, primarily, translators shall take the intended function of target text and the intention of original writer into consideration and choose proper translation strategies according to the three main rules of skopos theory, namely, the skopos rule, the coherence rule and the fidelity rule. Thus, translators may use adaptation and abridgement strategies in E-C translation on political news reports. Hopefully, this thesis would provide some insights for political news translation in the future.
