Research On The Applicability Of The College English Teaching Methods In Universities Of Tibet Autonomous Region

We believe that a crucial condition for improving and choosing a foreign language teaching method is to study the theory and the practice of the method. By doing this way, the best complete sets of methods can be selected. There are many kinds of foreign language teaching methods both at home and abroad. With the advancement and development of foreign language teaching practice, new teaching methods constantly emerge as time goes on. In foreign language teaching field, there are more than 20 kinds of systematic language teaching methods mainly including the Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Approach, the Contrast Method, the Conscious-Comparative Method, the Audio-Lingual method, the Consciously Practice Method, the Cognitive Method and the Functional Approach. Besides, there are Oral approach,Total Physical Response, Natural approach, the Silent Way, Community Language Teaching. From the early 20 th century to the present, the Grammar-Translation Method, the Direct Approach, the Audio-Lingual Method, the Cognitive Method and the Communicative Approach has been successively adopted by language teachers in China. Facing different language teaching methods, how should the teachers choose the best method? Is current teaching method the most applicable one?It is the premise for proper selection and application for languageteachers and researchers to know the origin, theoretical basis, the evolution process, the value and limitations of a foreign language teaching method and understand the teaching theory, grasp the essence and law of foreign language teaching. At the same time, it is necessary for the researchers to have the in-depth practice investigation and research analysis in order to understand and grasp the situation of the application of the foreign language teaching method.English teaching is not optimistic in universities of Tibet Autonomous Region(TAR). The number of students reaching the Grade Test is low; the gap for foreign language talents is large; the investments of teaching are greater than the returns. According to the reality of college English teaching in universities of TAR and the basis of theoretical analysis, this paper tends to enquire into the application situation of the college English teaching method of the four universities in TAR through classroom observations and interviews. Nine teachers’ twenty classes were selected for the class observations. The observation content includes:(1) Which kind of English teaching method is mainly adopted for college English teaching in universities of TAR?(2) What are the factors influencing teachers’ selecting of the teaching methods?(3)what kind of teaching methods are used for different types of teaching content and students, and how well does it work? The outcomes of the investigation reveal that college English teaching methods in universitiesof Tibet are not quite applicable. Facing different teaching content and student types, similar teaching methods and fixed models are often used.Moreover, the methods cannot meet the requirement of the different teaching demands. Each method has its own specific conditions and applicable scope. In order to reach the optimal effect of the teaching, this paper proposes the using of eclectic method for teaching and presents the models in order to provide reference for university’s college English teaching in TAR.The first part of this paper introduces the reasons for selecting the topic, the significance of this study, literature review, research tasks and methods.Chapter two is the brief introduction of foreign language teaching,including developing situation, the vertical and horizontal analysis of the main foreign language teaching at home and abroad.Chapter three, four and five are the main parts of this paper. Chapter three analyzes the factors that influence choosing foreign language teaching methods in TAR including theory and the practice investigation.Chapter four analyzes the college English teaching methods used in University of TAR. This chapter presents the college English teaching methods and its operation mode, applicability analysis of college English teaching in colleges and universities of TAR on the basis of student type and teaching content matching. Chapter five is a reflection of theselecting of college English teaching methods in the colleges and universities. It analyzes eclectic method teaching ideas, and conceives the implement mode of eclectic method for English teaching in the colleges and universities of TAR.The last part is conclusion including outcomes and shortcomings of the study, and the suggestions for the future study.
