| Howard Goldblatt, a famous American sinologist and translator, plays an important role in helping Mo Yan to become the 2012 winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. However, at present in China, there are so few Chinese professional translators devoted to C-E novel translation, and the data for research in C-E novel translation are also limited. All these factors hinder the diffusion of excellent Chinese novel works and culture.In exploring how a translated work can withhold the same effect as the original one, German Functionalist Skopos Theory proposes that the translation principles, strategies and skills are determined by translation purpose. By analyzing the text types of the original version and the translated version of Shifu, You’ll Do Anything for a Laugh, this thesis believes that novel translation is not merely a simple transformation between languages, but rather the target language culture and target receiver are major factors to be considered, and great importance should be attached to the cultural transformation function of the original text. This thesis proposes the principles, strategies and skills for C-E novel translation by contrasting and analyzing the original and translated versions of Shifu, You’ll Do Anything for a Laugh. First, through comparing “function” and “intention”, the most fundamental factors affecting the determination of translation purpose, the thesis proposes the following translation principles:(1) delivering culture to target readers,(2) taking readers’ interests into consideration, and(3) giving full play to the translators’ subjectivity. On this basis, we should take literal translation, foreignizing translation and semantic translation as basic strategies for C-E novel translation. Finally, the thesis also proposes specific skills for C-E novel translation: amplification, paraphrase, adaptation and omission. The author expects that this research can provide a theoretical direction for future C-E novel translation. |
