With the sharp development of economic globalization and further deepening of reform and opening up, increasing numbers of companies have realized the importance of intellectual property, so numerous companies apply for patent in Europe and America. Patent translation, especially C-E translation of patent abstracts has become a burgeoning and hot field in the translation industry. The demand of patent abstracts translation is huge, and the timeliness, accuracy and professionalism of abstracts translation are requested. However, achievements on professional research related to patent abstracts translation are rare. Most studies are description of methods and approaches of patent abstracts translation, lacking systematic theory research.Based on the writer’s patent abstracts translation practice, this thesis takes linguistic adaptation theory as the starting point, cites many translation examples, analyzes the characteristics of Chinese and English patent abstracts, and discusses the translation methods of C-E patent abstracts. The analysis and study show that as a special text, Chinese and English patent abstracts both have their unique features on lexical, syntactical and semantic levels. They also have similarities and differences. Therefore, in the translating process, translators can make dynamic adaptation according to different language phenomenon and choose accurate translation methods such as literal translation, imitating translation and modeling translation, thus enabling the target text to truly express the meaning of the source text.
