A Report On Translation Of Water Towards A Culture Of Responsibility(Excerpts)

This thesis is a report on the translation of a book called Water Towards a Culture of Responsibility, a book which belongs to natural resource or water supply. Author of this book, Antoine Frerot, CEO of Veolia Environment, distinguishes the real problems from the vain polemics, and calls for an alliance between responsibility and the will to act, through explaining how we can prevent them by political, economic, scientific means.The theory of text typology of Katharina Reiss, which is well applied in the process of translation, turns to be a great helper. Three types of the text are being discussed with related examples abstracted from the source text. A brief introduction of the three types of text is included in this report with the sequence of informative type, expressive type, and operative type.This report consists of five parts, which is task description, process description, background knowledge, case study, and conclusion. The task description gives introductions of the source text and the author, along with the significance of this report. The process description displays how the author has completed this translation task. A brief introduction of Reiss ’s text typology is included in the part of background knowledge. The case study, the most essential part in this report, provides the examples how the author finishes the translating task under the guidance of the text typology. The conclusion lists the author’s reflections and difficulties encountered in the translating task.This report may, to some extent, draw people’s attention to the study of text typology and its application, while the link between translation studies and text analyses can enlighten those who are engaged in the translation work. The author has found that, based on this very translating experience, it is essential to apply the theory of text typology to the work of translation, especially in terms of the translation strategies. For different types of text, considerations about what methods and strategies should be applied should be taken into account.
