A Report On How 7-month-olds Interpret Ambiguous Motion Events: Category-based Reasoning In Infancy

In this translation report, the source text is an academic paper in the field of psychology—entitled How7-month-olds Interpret Ambiguous Motion Events: Category-based Reasoning in Infancy. By reading the related literature in psychology, with the help of English-Chinese dictionaries and the Internet, the translator finished this task.The translation was processed within the theoretical framework of Text Types, which was first published in the 1970 s by Reiss, who had categorized texts into three main types, namely, informative text, expressive text and operative text. According to Reiss, the source text of this report(an academic paper) is an informative text which is written in concise and comprehensive words, logical paragraphs and with a purpose on expressing information. Thus the purpose of my translation task is to convey information from the source text to the target text as concisely as possible. In the process of translation, the translator encountered three main difficulties, namely in-text citation, terminology and authors’ names. To respond to the challenges, the author resorted to appropriate translation strategies and methods by means of making a glossary of terms and “zero translation” to arrive at the target.This report includes four chapters. The first chapter is task description. Chapter Two focuses on the process of translation in which a translating plan and performance, as well as the process of making a glossary are introduced. Chapter Three is devoted to case analysis which is used to exemplify the three main difficulties in the translation task. The last chapter summaries rules for informative text translation and makes a conclusion of this translation task.
