Advanced Preparation In Interpreting Quality Improvement

As one of the premises of realizing the purpose of interpreting, pre-interpreting preparation plays an important role in underpinning the interpreting quality. The significance of preparation in interpreting can be fully recognized through research and study conducted by many researchers and interpreting scholars. However, most of the research and study focus on preparation methods in interpreting, and some scholars prove the effect of preparation on interpreting through experiments. And post-interpreting reflections on the effect of preparation on interpreting quality are not commonly seen.Noted down all the preparation related mistakes that were made during the Chinese to English interpreting for CCPIT Shaanxi Sub-council and US Commercial Service, the author plans to analyze and classify those mistakes according to five criteria affecting interpreting quality proposed by Chiaro and Nocella(2004). The mistakes will be classified into five groups and will be taken as examples in the report to illustrate the importance of preparation on improving C-E consecutive interpreting quality from five aspects, namely, consistency with original, completeness of information, logical cohesion, fluency of delivery and correct terminology. Each criterion consists of two sections, positive effect of adequate preparation and negative effect of inadequate preparation. Through analyzing those examples, the interpreter aims to reflect and prove the importance of preparation on improving C-E consecutive interpreting quality from her own interpreting experience, which can help in improving the interpreter’s C-E interpreting quality in the days to come.
