Advance Preparation Process And Its Impact On Interpreting Quality

The inspiration of this report is derived from the author's consecutive interpreting(hereinafter referred to as "CI")practice "Shakespeare to Sherlock:Treasure of British Library in Chinas".Due to well-organized advance preparation from both the client and the writer,the interpreting performance was satisfactory and the entire event was a success.This experience exemplifies the importance of preparation and its role in ensuring language production.Advance preparation in interpreting was hardly seen as an essential research subject.Nonetheless,as interpreting evolves into an independent discipline,advance preparation is no longer taken for granted but rather seen as an active way to raise interpreter's initiative and maneuver the "unpredictability" and complexity of on-site interpreting.However,one loophole may be the over-stress on interpreter's side with fewer attention to organizer or client's side when it comes to preparation.Departing from real interpreting practice,this report intends to lay emphasis on pre-preparation approaches from both interpreters' and also clients' perspective by virtue of authentic case analyses.Preparation of the client may familiarize them with interpreting process and provide necessary guidance for interpreters to conduct targeted preparation.Furthermore,through preparation,interpreters know better the expectation of the client and fell more poised after studying the related knowledge.This report also boldly brings about the problems occurred during the preparation phase and notes down the author's solutions,the point of which is rarely seen in other reports.This report tries to deal with three questions:what are the focuses of advance preparation;how should preparation work proceed;does these advance preparation efforts pay off.In answering the first question,this report includes preparation from background knowledge,glossary building,familiarization with speaker's accent,familiarization with the working environment,and psychological preparation.For the second question,this report notes down the specific steps while the author accomplishing the case.Interpreting performance is the direct sign of advance preparation so for the third one,the report finds out the result by having a reflection on interpreting quality.
