Explicitation Strategy In Chinese-English Interpreting In The Light Of The Skopos Theory

This report describes and analyzes the author’s interpreting field practice at a sub-forum of the Third International Conference on Existential Psychology and Third International Conference on Students’ Psychological Education and Counseling, Guangzhou, Guangdong province. It mainly analyzes the interpretation of the speech delivered by a Chinese professor to discuss explicitation strategies in consecutive interpreting from Chinese to English in the light of the Skopos theory.This report introduces the author’s pre-task preparation and the whole process of the interpreting task. The report also reviews the notion of the Skopos theory, the definition of explicitation and previous studies on them. It elaborates on the problems occurred in the author’s interpreting product. Based on the analysis of the cases, the author believes that adding explanatory devices, adding connectives, making lexical specification are the specific explicitation strategies to improve the accuracy and to polish the language of her original output. It is the author’s hope that this report can provide some enlightenment for interpreter trainees to perform better in similar situations.
