A Study Of The Film Subtitle Translation From The Perspective Of Skoposthrorie

It was at the end of 19 th century that film came into being. It is the major cultural and artistic form in modern society. It is also the epitome or encyclopedia of the culture and the society. It has become an important tool for people to communicate in different culture background. A high-quality subtitle translation can convey message and promote and develop the culture more precisely. As a relativity new research field, the study of film subtitle translation at home need to be improved constantly.The thesis intends to study the translated subtitle selected from the film Life of Pi from the perspective of Skopostheorie. In Skopostheorie, the main purpose of subtitle translation is to present the target audience a fluent and easily understood subtitle in the limited time and space to achieve the goal of smooth communication between the target audience and the film. The research questions are as follows: ①Is there any feasibility of introducing Skopostheorie in analyzing film subtitle translation? If so, what is it? ②From the perspective of Skopostheorie, what kinds of translation strategies are used more frequently in film subtitle translation through the case study of Life of Pi? The thesis analyzes these subtitles which are of typical communicative purpose. The conclusions are the following ones: ①Due to the internal consistency between the research object of subtitle translation and the focus of Skopostheorie, there is feasibility of introducing Skopostheorie in analyzing film subtitle translation. ②Domestication,Foreignization,Adaptation, Addition and Omission are used more frequently in the film subtitle translation under the direction of the translation task which takes the target receivers as a core.This thesis is attempted to focus on the the analysis of film subtitle translation strategies under the guidence of Skopostheorie. It is expected that this tentative study can help the author has a deeper understanding of translation theories and contribute to the film subtitle translation in practice.
