A Comparative Study Of Two Chinese Subtitle Versions Of Silicon Valley From The Perspective Of Skopostheorie

China and other countries in the world have more and more cultural communication and development cooperation under the background of globalization so that an increasing number of foreign audio-visual programs have been introduced into China.Most of the Chinese audience have to rely on dubbing or Chinese subtitles to appreciate foreign films or TV series due to language barriers,and meanwhile the subtitle translation plays a decisive role in their introduction and promotion to the world.Therefore,quite a few scholars pay attention to the study of subtitle translation.Based on Skopostheorie,this thesis tries to comparatively analyze the two Chinese versions of Silicon Valley at the linguistic level and cultural level to find which version is better,and summarize which translation methods or techniques are adopted in order to accomplish the translation skopos.Through the comparative analysis of the two versions by Tencent Video and YYe Ts Video,there are three essential findings in the study.To begin with,subtitle translation is limited by time constraint and spatial constraint,and meanwhile the intentions of creators and the expectations of the target audience determine translation purposes in the process of subtitle translation.Secondly,Tencent Video and YYe Ts Video mainly satisfy the following five translation purposes in the process of translation: 1)Provide effective information for the target audience;2)Produce humorous effects and relax or entertain the target audience;3)Encourage readers to have correct values;4)Make the target audience have a better understanding of the character personality and the plot;5)Introduce American culture to the target audience.At last,the two subtitle translations adopt diversified translation methods and techniques to satisfy their translation purposes,such as literal translation,free translation,transliteration,annotation,euphemisms,amplification,and so on.The thesis further illustrates the feasibility of Skopostheorie in the process of subtitle translation and provides reference frame for subtitle translators.
