Novels are one of the four types of literature along with prose, poems and plays. Dialogues can not only shape the characters of a fiction, develop its plots, attract the readers, but also embody the aesthetic beauty and styles of the novelist. Therefore, the dialogue is an integral part in most novels. This translation report intended to analyze the Gothic short story The Old Nurse’s Story by investigating the different translation methods of dialogues conversed by characters of different ages, social classes and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to represent the identities of different characters, features of colloquial languages, the specific Gothic theme and particular scenarios and to cater to the target language. Thus, the translation fidelity, the splendor of dialogues could be satisfied and hence theme coincided.Through investigating the novel and case study, conclusions were drawn from the translation project:dialects of target language could be adopted to represent the dialectical features of characters from lower class, classical Chinese to the language of well-educated ones, typical Chinese colloquialism to Chinese readers, suitable sentence structures to emotions in conversations and harmonized words to the original intentions of the writer. It is hoped that this report could offer some references to literary translations of dialogues.
