With the acceleration of globalization, the communication between China and othercountries keeps deepening in various fields, and as such high-level diplomatic visits aswell as economic and cultural exchanges between cities are a common occurrence. Thiscase study comes from the meeting between YANG Weize (Secretary, Nanjing MunicipalCommittee of the CPC) and Sebastian Wood (British Ambassador to China) on July9,2013, during which the two parties exchanged extensive and in-depth thoughts onstrengthening the cooperation between Britain and Nanjing. As an intern at the ForeignAffairs Office of Nanjing Municipal Government, the author undertook the interpretingwork for Secretary Yang. This practice is a typical diplomatic interpreting, involving a wide range of Sino-British contents in politics, economics, history, culture, etc.. Due to its certain value foracademic research, the author converted the on-site recording into transcript forinterpreting process reflection. By combining linguistic comparisons with translationtheories, five issues were summed up:1. Handling repeated information;2. Handlingintellectual blind spots;3. Comprehension and translation of words’ contextual meaning;4.Handling onsite emergencies;5. Handling Sino-British cultural differences. This interpreting project report is mainly based on two dimensions: Horizontally itdemonstrates the various preparatory work done prior to interpreting; Vertically a casestudy is presented to analyze the problems encountered in fulfilling the task. By proposingimprovement plans, this study aims to provide reference for future interpreting work.
