With the increased interaction between China and the outside world, interpretation, as the bridge of international communication, is attracting more attention from all walks of life. Interpreters are listed as talents in urgent need. In 2007, Master of Translation and Interpretation( MTI) was granted by State Academic Committee to be professional master degree. The number of universities enrolling MTI students has been increased from 15 to 206. MTI becomes the most important way to train competent interpreters and the quality of MTI education becomes the focus of relevant enterprises and universities. The purpose of this thesis is to explore MTI interpretation teaching model that meets the market needs and to improve the quality of MTI education.Based on the guide of the Interpretive Theory of Translation to interpretation teaching and studies on the theory at home and abroad, this thesis divides the components of interpreter competence into: bilingual competence, extra-linguistic competence and vocational competence. Two questionnaires on the components of interpreter competence are designed to explore the discrepancy between MTI interpretation teaching and the demand of the interpretation market. So far, 68 valid questionnaires from surveyed companies and 100 valid questionnaires from MTI students are received. Processed by Excel, the data of questionnaires shows that the satisfaction of interpretation market and MTI students’ level in extra-linguistic and vocational competence perform worse; the main problems of MTI interpretation teaching are lack of practice and professional interpreting teachers according to the suggestions from surveyed companies and MTI students. Looking through training plans for MTI of 30 universities and based on the research findings of questionnaires, the author proposed to develop market-oriented MTI interpretation teaching model from the perspective of curriculum arrangement, teacher staff and school-enterprise cooperation.
