As intercultural communication is more frequently than ever before realized via television programs, more attention has been paid on the study of subtitle translation. The essay explores the subtitle translation of Rediscovering the Yangtze River from the perspective of Skopos Theory.This thesis consists of five parts. First, it provides an overview of domestic studies of subtitle translation. Then, in the second part, it discusses the general principles of subtitle translation based on the introduction of Skopos Theory and the analysis of the characteristics of subtitle translation. The text should be subjected to audience’s requirements. In the third part, the thesis expounds the translation problems confronted in the process of translating including word choice, sentence order and lyric style. In the fourth part, the translation strategies are proposed in accordance with translation problems discussed in the previous part, including 1) flexibly dealing culture-bounded words and four-character structures with different translating approaches; 2)adjusting the source text according to English syntax.3) condensing the text to meet the demands of audience. In the end of the thesis, a conclusion shed lights on further research on the requirements and expectations of the audience to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of C-E subtitle translation of documentaries.
