A Report On The Subtitle Translation Of Chinese Costumes

With the development of globalization,cultural exchanges around the world become more and more frequent.Being an important medium of cultural exchanges,films and television programs are playing an increasingly important role in the intercultural communication,so the subtitle translation has also aroused much attention.The report selects the subtitle translations of the first two episodes of a grand Chinese TV documentary series,Chinese Costumes.It has been broadcast on the CCTV documentary channel in 2015 and has attracted wide concern.Combining the aesthetics of costume design with attractive audiovisual language,this documentary series shows to the world the charming culture and customs embodied in Chinese costumes.At first,the report introduces the translation task and translation purposes.And it also briefs the Skopos Theory and its three rules and analyzes the features of subtitle translation as well as the difficulties of Chinese Costumes.Then it mainly discusses the guiding function of the Skopos Theory in the subtitle translation.In this translation practice,there are many difficulties,for example,the great difference between Chinese and English sentence structures,how to translate Chinese cultural words and four-word words,etc.Under this circumstance,considering the time restriction,space restriction and synchronization restriction of the documentary programs,some feasible translation strategies have been adopted from the perspective of Skopos Theory,such as reduction,annotation,omission and free translation.And these translation strategies have been further analyzed and demonstrated on the basis of a largenumber of cases.The report still has some inadequacies and needs to be revised and improved.Hopefully,the analysis of subtitle translation strategies under the guidance of Skopos Theory will provide reference for the future research.The translation of this subject is also of great significance to the promotion of Chinese culture.Therefore,the translator also hopes that it can enrich and improve the studies of documentary translation on the basis of previous studies,and help make Chinese national culture including Chinese costumes more popular in the world.
