The study of adverbs "jiu" and "cai" has been a hot area in Chinese grammar research in recent years. And the teaching of these two adverbs is also key and difficult points in teaching Chinese for foreign students since both of “jiu” and “cai” have various meanings and high frequency of utilization in Chinese communication. According to previous researches, this thesis organizes the research status of these two adverbs, and through error analysis, this study concludes the errors that foreign students make in their study and analyzes the reasons why they make these errors. At last, the author proposes an effective instructional design for teaching Chinese as a foreign language.Chapter One introduces the research purpose, significance and object of this study, summarizing the research status of adverbs “jiu” and “cai” and stating the source of corpus in this study.Chapter Two concludes the meanings of “jiu” and “cai” according to dictionary and previous researches, and then comparing the similarities and differences of these two adverbs from the aspects of semantics, grammar and pragmatics.Chapter Three analyzes the biased errors of adverbs “jiu” and “cai” concretely according to HSK corpora, making a classification of these errors which are caused when using “jiu” and “cai” as determinative adverbs, and discussing the reasons that cause these errors.Chapter Four concludes teaching difficult and important points according to the ontological study of “jiu” and “cai” in previous chapters, and proposes instructional designs of “jiu” and “cai” in teaching Chinese as a foreign language which is in the hope of making some contributions to the teaching of these kinds of adverbs.
