Semantic And Communicative Translation Of Financial News

With the rapid development of financial industry, financial news has become an indispensable means for people to obtain information. It not only provides sufficient economic information for relevant professionals, but also covers a wide range of information with great practical values. Because of this, translation of financial news is of great importance for the target readers to learn about foreign financial information and other messages.This thesis, based on Newmark’s theory of semantic and communicative translation, expounds the guiding significance of semantic and communicative translation in financial news. Taking as a case study the author’s translation of the financial news in Financial Times, the thesis analyzes the application of semantic translation and communicative translation to financial news. Semantic translation places emphasis on the accurate reproduction of the original information while communicative translation emphasizes that the effect of the translation to the target reader should be like that of the original to the original reader. Financial news gives priority to information delivering and its translation should adhere to the following three principles:faithfulness and completeness, unification and standardization, and appropriateness of register. The paper, by observing these three principles, discusses the translation of financial news in Financial Times from the perspectives of semantic translation and communicative translation respectively and sums up some flexible and practical methods such as literal translation, translation in order of the original sentences, conversion, addition or amplification, and reconstruction. Through these methods, semantic translation and communicative translation are effectively applied to the translation of financial news, thereby making the information contained in financial news clearly understood and smoothly accepted by the target readers.
