A Practice Report On E-C Translation Of English Financial News Under The Guidance Of Newmark’s Theory

Economic development is an important topic nowadays,so it is essential to readily understand and keep an eye on the updating global economic conditions.As a kind of news report,English financial news report is one main medium for people to learn economic information and it boasts its own special news value and stylistic characteristics,so its translation has its own particularity as well.The research of translating English financial news reports into Chinese brings great practical value and significance.The source text is financial news reports excerpted from The Economist from January to November 2021.The text typology is an information text,and enjoys the language characteristics of accuracy,conciseness and formality.Guided by Peter Newmark’s translation theory,translators should pay attention to the effect of information transmission in translation,and make efforts to produce the same effect on the target language readers as was produced by the original on the source language readers.A systematic analysis of the E-C translation of the financial news from The Economist is presented in this report.Under the guidance of Newmark’s theory,the key and difficult points and corresponding solutions are emphatically expounded in the form of case analysis from the perspective of vocabulary,syntax,and discourse.At lexical level,the translation of financial jargons should resort to the fixed expressions,zero translation,and the amplification method,polysemants’ specific meaning should be determined by the context,and the translation of synonyms should not emphasize synonymous substitution in Chinese financial news reports.It also analyzes the translation of idioms,which are the cultural carrier and essence of English.Literal translation method can be used to substitute the English idioms with similar Chinese idioms that can achieve formal correspondence as well as meaning equivalence.Free translation is used in cases when there does not exist corresponding Chinese idioms.At syntactical level,based on the principle of simplifying the complex,the methods commonly used for translation of long and complex English sentences are sequential translation,reversed order translation,division translation,combination translation,and comprehensive translation.For translation of the passive sentences frequently used in English financial news,five commonly employed methods are introduced in detail.At the textual level,textual cohesion and coherence and the reproduction of news text style are respectively analyzed.This report studies the language features of the source texts,the problems and translation methods of English financial reports in light of Newmark’s translation theory,which lays the foundation for the author’s future translation in this field.The author also hopes that this report can broaden the theorical perspective of E-C financial new translation,and serve as one useful reference for similar and related translation practice.
