Studies concerning the words in TCSL(Teaching Chinese as a Second Language) textbooks usually touch upon all the aspects in selection and compilation of words. This paper, with an analysis of the primary stage of two comprehensive textbooks, namely New practical Chinese reading textbook by Liu Xun and Developing Chinese by Li Quan, aims to explore the control over the quantity of the words, vocabulary classes, lexical repetition, meanings of new words, relevant exercises on words and to propose certain advice on the compilation process. Methods adopted include literature study, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis, and comparative analysis.This paper comprises six parts.Part â…  Introduction. This part presents the significance of the study, object of study, methodology, and related domestic and overseas research.Part â…¡ This part provides the importance of quantity control over new words, selection of vocabulary classes in addition to a brief introduction to the Outline of Vocabulary Classes of Syllables and Chinese Characters for use in a TCSOL textbook. Besides, this part also conducts a comparative analysis on the total number of new words in the aforementioned two textbooks, that of each lesson and that of various levels.Part â…¢ This part elaborates on the statistics of repetitive rate of words and then makes relevant comparison and comments.Part â…£ This part presents a comparative analysis of the vocabulary interpretation mode, ways, objects, and notes on parts of speech in New practical Chinese reading textbook and Developing Chinese.Part â…¤ This part analyzes and assesses the exercises on words in New practical Chinese reading textbook and Developing Chinese.Part â…¥ Conclusion. This part gives a summary of the research findings, the innovation of the paper as well as possible inadequacies.
