In this paper the study investigates Chinese learning strategies of 40 students from the University of Edinburgh and 31 students from the Confucius Institute for Scotland by means of questionnaires and interviews. This comparative study analyzes students at entry level from different age groups and backgrounds in Edinburgh. Based on the results of the study, we want to give advice to help students learning Chinese and Chinese teachers teaching Chinese.This paper is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the current situation of students learning Chinese all over the world and the Confucius Institute, also the significance of the comparative study. Chapter 2 discusses the definition of learning strategies and researches related to Chinese learning strategies inside China and abroad, summarizing the outcome of the results of this research. Chapter 3 is about the designation of the research including the questionnaire and data collection process of the study. Chapter 4 is about the analysis of the data collected.Through analyzing the data on SPSS, the results are discussed and summarized. Chapter 5 summarizes the inspiration on Chinese learning strategies research and advice for the Confucius Institute, Chinese volunteer teachers and Hanban.
