The concept of "self-efficacy" was first put forward by the American psychologist Bandura.Once this concept was put forward,it has been widely used in psychology, pedagogy, organizational management and other fields. The academic self-efficacy is its extension in the field of education. At present, there are a lot of studies about academic self-efficacy abroad, but at home most of them are in the field of teaching English as a second language."Chinese learning self-efficacy" refers to the individual's belief in Chinese learning ability and it is also the expression of academic self-efficacy in the field of Chinese learning. However now the number of research results on self-efficacy in Chinese learning is still small, most of the research objects are foreign students who learn Chinese in China, but there are few studies take learners who learn Chinese in non-target language environment as research objects. In view of this, the author combined her internship experience in Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna and conducted a survey of learners' self-efficacy in Chinese learning in Confucius Institute. In recent years, with the close interactions between China and Austria in economic, cultural and other fields, the number of Chinese learners in Austria has increased rapidly.During the author's internship, the number of students in one phase of Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna had exceeded 110 and this number hit record highs. In this paper,82 Chinese learners from Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna were selected as the subjects in order to learn the general situation of their Chinese learning self-efficacy,and also the influence of age, gender,Chinese proficiency, learning time and whether they have a Chinese identity or not on their Chinese learning self-e fficacy. This article is divided into six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction which mainly explains the research background, research purpose and significance of the topic.Chapter Two is literature review.By consulting a lot of domestic and foreign literature material, this paper summarizes the research situation of learning self-efficacy abroad and the correlative studies on academic self-efficacy in English teaching and teaching Chinese as a second language in China.Chapter Three is about research design,it introduces the research design of self-efficacy in Chinese learning of students in the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna in detail from research object, research methods and research steps these three aspects.Chapter Four is about research results and analysis. This paper makes a quantitative analysis of the collected questionnaires to explore the general situation of Chinese learning self-efficacy of the students in Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna based on abstract data, and it also explores the factors influencing self-efficacy in Chinese learning from five aspects:age, gender,Chinese proficiency, learning time and whether the students are foreign citizens of Chinese origin or not.Chapter Five puts forward some suggestions.According to the findings and conclusions of Chapter Four,it provides suggestions to Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna from these three aspects:teaching organization, teachers and learners.Chapter Six is a concluding part.In this section the author gives a summary about the whole paper and also makes some reflections.Meanwhile the author also discusses the research results, points out the shortcomings and talks about the prospect. The conclusions are as follows:Generally speaking, the self-efficacy in Chinese learning of the students in the Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna is at a medium level. And the students'sense of control is higher than their sense of basic capability.Among all the dimensions of their basic capability, positive self-expectation is the strongest and the aptitude is the lowest.General Chinese learning self-efficacy is higher than listening, speaking, reading, writing and communication these special Chinese learning self-efficacy.Among all those kinds of special Chinese learning self-efficacy,students' listening and reading self-efficacy is higher than that of communication, writing and speaking. In those five dimensions of sense of control, the sense of effort runs the first and self-doubt scores the lowest. In the aspect of difference analysis, the Chinese learning self-efficacy of students in Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna is not affected by age, gender and whether they have a Chinese identity or not, while Chinese proficiency and learning time have a significant impact on learners' self-efficacy.The phenomenon is shown that students can have a stronger sense of efficacy under the condition of their higher level or longer time of learning. In the two dimensions of the sense of basic capability and sense of control, the influence of basic capability on Chinese proficiency and learning time is the same as that of Chinese learning self-efficacy.Whether the students are foreign citizens of Chinese origin or not has an impact on basic capability, which is mainly reflected in the sense of aptitude. The sense of control is not affected by any factors.Students are the subjects of teaching activities, especially for those learners who study Chinese in non-target language environment. These leaners also have their own particularities. This study investigates the self-efficacy of students in Confucius Institute at the University of Vienna, and analyzes its basic situation and its influencing factors so as to provide some related teaching suggestions for Chinese teachers.Through this paper,to some extent the author hopes that it can help the teachers who are engaged in Chinese teaching in Austria to have a better understanding of the local students' self-efficacy in Chinese learning, and arouse their attentions to the individual differences of students' self-efficacy and also help them to improve the pertinence of Chinese teaching. This paper also has certain practical significance in improving the quality and efficiency of Chinese teaching when Chinese is taken as a second language.
