Nowadays, under China’s policy of comprehensively deepening reform and opening up, the vogue for historical reading in China provides serious historical writings of foreign scholars with a good opportunity to be introduced to Chinese readers. Taking the translation of the excerpts from Going to War: British Debates from Wilberforce to Blair into Chinese as an example, the thesis aims at revealing the strategies and tactics to translate into Chinese the writings at the "introduction stage of marketing" and with the theme of the history of international relations. Such a translation requires the translator to take the functionalist skopos theory as the guidance, determine the target reader from the practical and market-oriented perspective of cross-cultural communication, and adopt the corresponding strategies of phraseology, facilities for understanding, and information processing to meet the requirements of acceptance, reader-friendliness, and political appropriateness, so as to produce the qualified works to fill the gap in the market and contribute to the sinicized "functionalist skopos" theory. |
